Don’t underestimate the importance your theme plays in creating blogging success. The importance a Theme plays in blogging success really hit home with me.
The day began as most days do. I got up, made coffee and navigated my morning “commute” which entails walking down the hall and turning left into the bedroom that serves as my office. I turned on my computer, checked my email and launched Twhirl. Twhirl is a tool to make Twitter easier to ues. (If you are having trouble “getting” Twitter – it’s because you’re not using Twhirl or Tweetdeck. They help A LOT!)
One of the things people do with Twitter is to announce new blog posts – and one of the things I recommend you to do “market” your blog is to leave comments on other blogs. I call it leaving breadcrumb trails back to your blog and it’s an important part of the 8 Week Power Blog Launch course. Well, if you’re following a blogger who announces their blog posts via Twitter – you can snag a coveted top spot in their comments.
So, I start following the URL’s in various Tweets – and I see that TWO of the people I’m following are using the EXACT SAME THEME. They haven’t modified it a bit – and it’s a theme with some really STRONG design elements. The theme is not only very distinctive – it positively overpowers the content of the blog. The problem for these two bloggers is they are both blogging in the same niche using the same theme.
The whole experience impressed upon me the IMPORTANCE of “customizing” your theme – even if it’s just by adding elements to the sidebar.
Thus the list of Free WordPress 2.7 themes. Of course, I’m using Thesis here – and this experience has illustrated that I need to spend some time “dressing” it up a bit if I’m going to keep using it here.
